W House is an intensive 6-9 month residential facility for women recovering from chemical dependency. Twenty-four hour staffing provides the structure and support for women in the early stages of recovery. No one is turned away due the inability to pay. When leaving W House, clients will have an ability to gain control of everyday life stresses, decision making and attain a supportive caring support group that promotes emotional and spiritual growth that helps to bridge to the recovery community.

Admission is available to women with a primary diagnosis of a Substance Use Disorder, who meet the placement criteria defined by the American Society of Addiction Medicine. A woman must be referred by a case worker or addiction professional while involved in a 30 day inpatient treatment program, intensive outpatient program or jail based addiction program. An individual must be willing to abide by House rules and policy and be physically and mentally able to participate in all program components including employment. The individual woman must be able to express to the satisfaction of clinical staff during an in-person or phone prescreen interview an honest appraisal of her addiction as well as a willingness to make needed lifestyle changes.

Treatment is directed toward applying recovery skills, preventing relapse, promoting personal responsibility, and reintegrating clients in the worlds of work, education, and family life. Interpersonal and group living skills are promoted through the use of community house meetings involving clients and staff. Clinical services are also directed toward enhancing treatment acceptance and motivation, preventing relapse, and promoting eventual reintegration into the community through addressing vocational rehabilitation, parenting skills, emotional coping skills and the development of a support network.
Weekly individual sessions focus on evaluation of current functioning, coping, development of problem solving techniques, exploration of family of origin issues, past experiences of trauma, development and review of treatment plans and discharge planning. Weekly Women’s group participation focuses on the disease of alcoholism and drug addiction, relapse, emotional defenses, family illness, and co-dependency, identifying feelings, and unresolved emotional issues. Weekly Lifeskills group focuses on dealing with anger, anxiety, fear, dealing with others, analyzing problems and developing solutions, relaxation, resume writing, interviewing, and job skills development. Weekly Parenting Groups have the goal of acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance parenting ability. The focus is on facilitating an understanding of feelings, thoughts, and experiences of her children in relation to her addiction, treatment, and return to the household as a clean and sober parent. Also, teaching techniques that encourage a child’s self-reliance and personal knowledge of rules and limit setting for children is incorporated into this group. Case Management services are provided to coordinate wrap-around services including GED preparation, vocational training, health care needs, mental health evaluation and medication management.
Individuals must have an honest desire to make needed lifestyle and behavioral changes to facilitate long term recovery. Must obtain full time employment or volunteer if disabled. Must attend weekly group and individual sessions. Daily 12 step meeting attendence and sponsor-sponsee relationship is required. Must pay weekly rent of $60.00 and provide own food and personal hygiene items. Random spot checks while working and on pass are performed along with random urinalysis and breathalyzers.
W House is located in Hagerstown, with access to public transportation and within walking distance to many 12 Step Fellowship meetings, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Department of Social Services and the Department of Parole & Probation. W House is a homelike atmosphere with well maintained living areas, double occupancy bedrooms, a computer lab and a charming backyard.
