Client's primary diagnosis must be substance abuse. Clients must have completed an inpatient treatment program and have been referred by that facility. In some instances, clients may be referred from physicians, public health agencies, social services and the courts, as well as self referrals. The client population is becoming increasingly diverse and includes more clients with HIV and other co-occurring disorders as well as a greater variety in social background. Methadone-maintained clients are not excluded. Clients must also be able to abide the program and house rules.
Intensive 6 to 12 month residential treatment program
25 Adult Males
The program is based on the disease concept of chemical dependency and twelve step recovery programs. Each resident has a treatment program tailored to his personal situation and individual needs. This program includes in-depth assessment and treatment planning followed by individual and group counseling, referrals for rehabilitation and educational training, coordination of aftercare treatment services and assistance in utilization of community resources. There is a strong network of individuals in recovery in the local community that is very active in engaging the residents and supporting them in a 12 step program (e.g. Alcoholics Anonymous(AA) or Narcotics Anonymous(NA). Two 12 step meeting are held on site weekly. The remainder of the time, the residents attend meetings in the community. An increasing number of clients are entering the program after a relatively short (7-10 days) treatment program rather than 28 days of treatment, the former standard of care. At present managed care generally limits the number of days of inpatient treatment clients can receive before being discharged.
Clients must abstain from all mind-altering and mood-altering drugs, unless prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider. Clients are required to attend a minimum of five twelve-step meeting a week. Clients are required to attend individual and group counseling sessions and other groups as determined in their individual treatment plan. Clients must be employed or seeking employment or actively enrolled in an educational program. Clients must abide by the program and house rules.
Damascus House is a twenty-five bed continuing care facility located on approximately two acres just south of the Baltimore City line in Anne Arundel County, serving Baltimore, Anne Arundel County and the greater metropolitan area. The living facilities are housed in a former mansion house.
